Rafn Studio selected for 20 km vision plan

Holbæk Municipality has selected Rafn Studio to develop a new vision plan for Kalvemose Å and its surrounding landscape.

February 17, 2026

The project will establish a coherent landscape framework for the river system and explore how water management, urban development, nature restoration and recreation can be brought together in one long-term strategy.

The vision plan is closely linked to the planned development along Holbæk’s southern edge. A key task is to develop nature-based solutions for handling surface water from future urban areas while reducing pressure on Kalvemose Å and strengthening the river as a continuous ecological and recreational structure.

Along the 20 km river system, significant areas have also been identified in connection with the Green Tripartite Agreement. Within the 3,900-hectare catchment, around 460 hectares are designated as potential areas for land take-out, wetlands and low-lying landscapes. This creates an opportunity to connect climate adaptation with nitrogen reduction, biodiversity, restored hydrology and new landscape qualities at a much larger scale.

Rafn Studio approaches Kalvemose Å as one interconnected system: hydrological, ecological, cultural and spatial. The ambition is to reveal where these agendas can reinforce one another and form the basis for a resilient landscape that connects Holbæk more closely with its surrounding countryside and coast.

The vision plan is expected to be released for public hearing autumn 2026.
